Note to Editor:
  • The MAX5961 is a 0 to 16V, quad hot-swap controller with integrated I²C voltage and current monitor.
  • This device integrates a 10-bit ADC to enable voltage and current monitoring on each channel for high-availability systems.
  • The MAX5961 also stores 5ms of past voltage and current measurements, which are available through an I²C interface, to ease system debugging and failure analysis.
  • The MAX5961 is ideal for networking, base-station, storage, computer, and server line cards.

SUNNYVALE, CA—October 8, 2008—Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX5961, the industry's highest-integration, quad hot-swap controller for 0 to 16V backplanes. This device allows line cards to be safely inserted and removed from a live backplane without causing glitches on the system power-supply rail. The industry's most advanced solution, the MAX5961 integrates a 10-bit ADC that is multiplexed to enable voltage and current monitoring on each channel for high-availability systems. Additionally, the device features an internal circular buffer that stores 5ms of past voltage and current measurements, which are available through an I²C interface, to ease system debugging and failure analysis. Offering the industry's most advanced monitoring and protection features, the MAX5961 is ideal for networking, base-station, storage, computer, and server line cards.

Designed for demanding applications, the MAX5961 integrates comprehensive protection features. It is rated for 0 to 16V inputs, and can withstand transients or inductive spikes up to 30V. This device, moreover, provides controlled inrush current at startup, as well as two levels of overcurrent protection after startup. Five digital comparators per hot-swap channel implement overcurrent warning, two levels of overvoltage detection, and two levels of undervoltage detection. Other features include alert outputs to indicate undervoltage, overvoltage, and overcurrent faults.

The MAX5961 can be configured for operation as four independent hot-swap controllers, as two hot-swap controllers operating in pairs, or as a group of four hot-swap controllers. It can also be configured for latched-off or autoretry fault management.

The MAX5961 is available in a 7mm x 7mm, 48-pin TQFN package with an exposed pad, and is fully specified over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range. Prices start at $6.38 (1000-up, FOB USA).
