SUNNYVALE, CA—November 16, 2006—Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the latest member of its high-speed, LVDS SERDES family-the MAX9254 hot-swappable, high-output-drive, 21-bit, DC-balanced LVDS deserializer with programmable spread spectrum. This device spreads output clock and data over a specified ±2% or ±4% range to reduce EMI. By reducing the number of wires/traces from 22 to 8, the MAX9254 simplifies design, saves space, and diminishes the cost of system interconnects, such as cables and backplanes. The MAX9254 deserializer works very well with the MAX9209/MAX9213 serializers, and is ideal for driving 800 x 480 resolution displays in automotive navigation and entertainment systems, and in digital copiers.

When the MAX9254 operates at a 40MHz clock speed, the maximum aggregate payload data rate is 840Mbps. Higher output-drive capability enables the device to meet LCD setup and hold times in the presence of higher capacitive loads. DC-balancing provides two notable advantages. First, it reduces bit errors resulting from a change in common mode when a ground shift occurs, thus allowing isolation between the serializer and deserializer. Secondly, it also allows the AC-coupling of LVDS inputs, which provides short-to-battery protection.

The MAX9254 deserializes three LVDS serial inputs into 21 single-ended LVTTL/LVCMOS outputs and communicates over a 3-wire twisted-pair/differential line. The LVDS inputs meet the requirements of both the ANSI/TIA/EIA-644 LVDS standard and the ISO 10605 standard (±25kV Air, ±8kV Contact). A separate output supply interfaces to 1.8V to 5V logic-level inputs. Hot-swap capability increases fault tolerance and allows "on-the-fly" frequency programming.

The MAX9254 is specified for operation from -40°C to +85°C, and is available in a 48-pin, low-profile TSSOP package. Prices start at $4.62 (1000-up, FOB USA).
