I talked to the product manager and understand you also talked to tech support.
You are running Windows using a virtual machine, running on a Linux system. The software uses a Windows driver not present on your config.
The software does work on a standard Windows installation (that is, Windows running native on a PC, without a virtual machine).

I agree to esp. The software does not run under native XP. Runs under 98. Depending on computer (tried many) some does not install Port98nt.exe, some allows to install but still max1452.exe crashes ("...encountered a problem and needs to close"). Allows to run if launched in compatibility mode, but does not communicate. Neither the serial.dll cannot be used, crashes labview. Maxim does not share the source code so I won't recommend using the chip (1452/1455) in small volume designs.

The applications engineer replied as follows:
The MAX14452/MAX1445 software is compatible with Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP. It needs the PORT98NT driver to directly access the UART registers of the PC serial port. This driver must be installed by the user and it is necessary for ALL Windows NT/2000/XP machines. Only 32-bit operating systems are supported.
USB to serial port adapters are NOT supported and neither are serial ports with non-standard port addresses. The supported port addresses are 0x3F8, 0x2F8, 0x3E8 and 0x2E8.
Due to the strict timing restrictions of the MAX1452/MAX1455 communication interface, this software cannot run on Virtual Machines. The SERIAL.DLL software which has building blocks of the MAX1452/MAX1455 functions is frequently updated to keep up with changes in operating systems and computer system.
The latest versions of the SERIAL.DLL file addresses issues with multiple-CPU machines. It is not yet posted on the website and can be obtained by contacting technical support. The EVKIT software on the Maxim website will be updated shortly.
The SERIAL.DLL is a C-call DLL, and NOT a stdcall DLL. This C-call DLL is used by the LabView based application provided with the Evaluation Kit software. For a stdcall version of the DLL, for use with Visual Basic or other software, please contact technical support.
Maxim does share the source code with its customers. To get a copy of the source code, please contact technical support: http://www.maxim-ic.com/support

Hello
I got the updated serial.dll from Maxim support and now the system works as is should. Thanks a lot. Here is the answer:
The SERIAL.DLL included in the EVKIT software posted online is compatible with Windows XP. However, some computers with dual core and other OS specific reasons does not work. I have attached the latest version of the SERIAL.DLL software that will overcome these issues. These files must be replaced for the SERIAL.DLL in the current MAX1452 working directory.
One more comment: In my computer the serial port was not wired from the motherboard at all, but serials were in PCI-bus card. These ports does not work with serial.dll. When I wired the serial port from the motherboard the serial.dll works.
