astroboy   - what to write thru SPI to max6960
2008-09-22
I cannot find information what data to write through SPI to max6960. And what functions or configurations are used in max6960, that I can write to?

The product manager responded:

MAX6960's data write format and details are listed in the datasheet page 10, section 'Register Addressing Modes' and Table 7. Also, the 'Host 4-wire Serial Interface' section explains the SPI interface protocol and data format.

Wow so long to reply! Thank you. I will work on it immediately Thanks again. Heard about Jack Gifford. Very touching and an inspiration!

Yes, sorry, that reply took way longer than it should.
  MicroIngenia   - RGB 8x8 matrix

I'd like to know if Maxim is thinking about developing a chip like max6960 ( RGY 8x8 Matrix ( 8 rows, 16 columns )) but with a RGB 8x8 matrix ( 8 rows, 24 columns ). If this were possible, when could this chip be available?? There are alternatives based onto more than one chip... but I´m interested on a full one chip solution like max6960.

As you mention, you can use multiple MAX6960 to achieve RGB color in a 8x8 matrix.
Unfortunately, we do not have an immediate plan for a single-chip solution RGB solution.

Can we disign a rolling large message displays with the Max6960 chips?

It is possible. However, driving a display will need active control of a micro controller. The controller will have to send different data pattern frames to MAX6960 in order to make the appearance of a rolling message.
If you like further assistance or can consider another part, please contact me directly: Shideh.darman@maxim-ic.com

Thanks for the reply. Do you have another part no, where in rolling displyas can easily be implemented? As rolling display needs contineous data update on SPI bus, if the display is large in size (e.g. 1 ft x 10 ft) will it be effective with MAX6960?  Please do suggest me suitable part no.  Also ARM7 would be my preference for host controller.

I talked to the product manager and learned you are in correspondence with them via e-mail. If you have any significant findings you wish to share with other users, you can comment here. For now, I will assume all is resolved.
