I can only find the EEPROM replacement. No counters?

It is correct that currently there is no 1-Wire replacement part with counter functions as supported by the DS2423.

Any plans for a replacement with the counter function?

There are no current plans to develop a new 1-Wire IC with counter functions such as featured with the DS2423.  Maxim welcomes customer feedback on new product ideas.  Please take a moment to input your thoughts at http://www.maxim-ic.com/products/1-wire/product_feedback.cfm

A multi-channel 32bit counter has many applications e.g. power meters, weather sensors etc. It's a pity this device is now longer available.

Thank you for your feedback.  Maxim is certainly interested in supplying and developing products that address market needs.  You will be contacted off forum to further understand your application.

"You will be contacted off forum to further understand your application."

Understand our application? You cannot be serious! Take a look at this:
http://www.maxim-ic.com/products/ibutton/weather/
this is _your_ url!!

For 10 years you have been promoting this chip as a fundamental part of the weather equipment that thousands of people around the world are using to pursue a scientific hobby.  This chip is used in anemometers, rain gauges and a host of other devices that can be used to monitor regular events.  They are by nature prone to distruction by lightning and need replacing regularly.  If you do not make a pin compatible counter available you are dooming a huge amount of equipment to obsolesence (could be $00,000) which could last indefinitely, not to mention ruining a fine hobby for many amateur scientists.

For goodness sake science and technology as a hobby is dwindling fast enough without your hammering another nail in its coffin.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make a counter available!

We're sorry, but the 1-Wire weather station promotional product was discontinued many years ago. Unfortunately, some of the associated parts are no longer available. We regret the inconvenience.  While a new stand-alone 1-Wire IC product with counter function(s) is not currently planned, it is not inconceivable that this type of device will not be developed in the future.

You guys can't be serious. Do you have any idea just how many different applications this chip has?? Just go look at how your sales of this item have been...Never mind the $ value. PLEASE, bring a counter product back or make one with 20k or more memory that is pin compatible. PLEASE.

Thank you for your request. I spoke to the product manager. They fully appreciate the part's usefulness in some applications and are well aware of its sales volume. Your requests have been noted by the right people and they are taking your inputs into account in product planning. I am sorry we can't make any promises.

I want to join the group of people that is using this IC to measure things like rain, energy and water consumption etc.
I also want that you build a new version of counter functionality.
Maybe build a clean counter with one channel in TO92 package, or add counter function to for example DS2413?

I hope that more people will make you aware of the needs for a 1-wire counter!

Yes - there is a need for at sensor with counter functionality for all us weather nerds!

Yes, there is a clear need for this type of function, also  outside the weather stations. If some day redesign is considered, I second the idea of a TO92 package or the inclusion in a device like the 2413/06/07. Anyone out there with verifiable volume needs that might help us convince Maxim?

What kind of volume needs would convince Maxim?

I just started anlyzing which solution we could best use for a new project. DS2423 seems to be just what we need.  We'd need between 5 and 10 thousand pcs over the next couple of years. That's not going to change Maxims strategy I'm afraid and I don't think we can commit to ordering it all at once.

Not knowing the replacement plans of Maxim I think we now have to look for another way. Unless supply or replacement can be guaranteed.

What would be an alternative if we want to interface another counter with the 1-wire master of our main device? Something like a slave-bridge would be required, somehow not conflicting with the Global Unique ID concept. Can another DSxxxx be used for that purpose? I could only find a master-bridge in the product list.

Hello I'm from Poland. Many people in my country are waiting for DS2423. We have constructed many systems and have written aplications to measure weather, electrical, gas - intelligent  house. We need this counter asap.

Cut your nose to spite your face.

I have heard many engineers say they will no longer any Maxim chips in their designs because of this very situation.

I too would have to agree, especially with a simple device like this that is abandoned for no logical reason. If nothing else you could have raised the price of the item to make it profitable and still accommodate thousands of your old customers.

I guarantee that not one of the old users of that device will continue to use Maxim for any new projects.

We're really sorry to disappoint any users and we try hard to avoid it. The product group has discussed the DS2423 at length and tried to come up with alternatives. Unfortunately, this product is not manufacturable in current processes and it is prohibitively expensive to move this very old, low volume part to a more modern fab process.

Over the years we have introduced thousands of products to the marketplace and have obsoleted very few that still have reasonable customer demand. We take very seriously the trust that our customers place in us that our parts will always be available. In those few cases where we unfortunately need to discontinue a product, we believe that we have one of the most generous EOL (end of life) policies in the industry.

@prof: Try an ATtiny13A as alternative and programmable too.

I would just like to chime in here as well... I just came back to your website to get a datasheet for some DS2423 samples that I have.  I am ready to build a new project and this is the perfect chip for it.  I also published a design idea in EDN magazine around using this chip.  (http://www.edn.com/article/CA63743.html) I am very disappointed to hear that it is discontinued.  Bad decision, guys.  Dallas would not have done this.  Must have been those Sunnyvale guys.
