HFAN-04.5.0: Measuring Deterministic Jitter with a K28.5 Pattern and an Oscilloscope

Jul 17, 2002

Abstract: Accurate jitter measurement is a challenge for Ethernet and Fibre Channel components. While test equipment designed specifically for jitter measurement is available from multiple sources, this equipment can be cost-prohibitive or just too specialized for some applications. However, using a probe and a regular off-the-shelf digital sampling oscilloscope, accurate and reasonably fast deterministic-jitter measurements can be made with nowhere near the financial outlay that designers have come to expect. Read on for step-by-step instructions on how this can be done for relatively short patterns.
